KINDERGARTEN NEWS:
The bulletin boards are coming down, next years class has had their visit, the baby chicks have gone home, field day is behind us, and the traditional Kindergarten friendship pillows are made. As hard as it may be to believe, these all mark the end of another school year. It has been a great year in Kindergarten. The children have worked hard and are looking forward to some summer fun. We thank all of you for your support throughout the year and wish you a safe and relaxing summer. See you in the fall!
FIRST GRADE NEWS:
We are doing a mini unit on earthworms as we finish up the year. The amazing mathematicians in first grade are learning to do addition regrouping with numbers in the thousands!!! We are talking about the importance of reading a lot this summer so we don't lose any of the great progress we have made as readers. We don't want to go backward, we want to keep getting better and that takes practice. Ms. Tracey and Mrs. Mead have been very proud of all the first graders this year and hope they have a safe and relaxing summer. Read, read, read!
SECOND GRADE NEWS:
Thank you to all the families who have helped students complete their weekly reading assignments. At the time of this newsletter we have read 98,614 minutes on our reading logs. We are pretty sure that on Monday we will reach our goal of 100,000 minutes!!!
Remember to keep your children reading over the summer; it will certainly make a difference when they return to school in the fall. I will be giving students a reading log book. I would love them to keep track of what they read over the summer and show me when they return in August.
Thank you to all the families who have sent in snack over the school year and to the following student's families who sent in snack during the last two weeks: Carlee, Stephen, Mallory, Taylor, Lindsey, Sarah and Miss Cindy. I hope you all have a relaxing, fun summer!
THIRD GRADE NEWS:
As we wind down our year in third grade, I would like to say it has been an enjoyable experience getting to know the third graders on a more personal and daily level. We have worked hard learning a wide variety of concepts from the Solar System in Science, to Multiplication and Division in Math, from Poetry and Comprehension strategies in Reading to the History of Massachusetts. Oh, the things that we have learned together.
To continue the progress made by all, I would like to encourage and recommend that everyone read during the summer and practice the basic facts in math of addition, subtraction and multiplication.
It has been proven that those children who read during the summer have a better start in school in the fall than those who don't read.
FOURTH GRADE NEWS:
Have a fun filled, safe summer vacation AND READ!! Most fourth grade students have successfully completed a research project and study of an endangered Bird of Prey. The report and visual aids that accompany the project are displayed on a showboard in the entryway at Hawlemont. Please stop by the school to see the excellent work the kids have completed. Thanks to Ms. Jane Wegscheider, our art teacher, who loaned us the paint to use in the classroom, and to Mr. D. for allowing us to work in the classroom. It was an incredibly fun project and the kids worked many hours to complete their work.
On Monday at 7:00 AM, the class will have a year-end class trip to Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT, and plan to return to school by 5:30-5:45 PM. Students have taken this trip for the past few years, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the aquarium as well as the picnic at the beach later on in the day. Parents who are not driving should meet their child in the parking area outside the building, as Sixth Grade graduation will be about to commence. Thanks to all the parents who are driving and helping with the trip.
FIFTH GRADE NEWS:
The 5th Grade will be having a picnic at the fairgrounds on Monday, June 19th. Mrs. Connell is providing lunch and treats. Parents are invited to come and join us. It has been a wonderful year for me at Hawlemont and I look forward to keeping tabs on this class and their future achievements. I would also like to thank everyone who helped me learn the ropes and made my year easier for me. I have seen all of your children grow by leaps and bounds and anticipate even more adventures for them next year in 6th grade. Ms. Karen was an extremely important part of the progress made this year for your child. Thank you Ms. Karen- we couldn't have done it without you.
SIXTH GRADE NEWS:
Almost There! Graduation is Monday Night, June 19th, starting at 6pm. All 6th graders should be back at school at 5:30 to be ready for the ceremony. We anticipate that students will be dressed nicely for this formal ceremony. There will be a reception in the cafeteria following the graduation. We look forward to seeing everyone there Monday night!
Field day on Wednesday was a great success. The 6th graders were in charge of running all the events out on the field and everyone did a great job. Most of us managed to get quite wet by the end of the morning, but all in good fun. Thanks to each 6th grader for rising to the occasion and taking responsibility for helping their classmates have a fun and successful morning.
Mr. G and I were both reflecting on the 6th grade class the other day and noting how much they have grown up over the last two years. We both admitted that we will miss this group, we have all worked hard together. I wish them all well as they move onto the 7th grade!
From Ms Boehmer and the library:
There are still a few over due books out there. The library has sent over due letters and notices to parents and students, so please check and make sure your books are turned in.
Be sure to sign up for Summer Reading at the Tyler Memorial Library and join us in July for our Reading Adventures on Thursday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:30 in the Children's Room at the Tyler Memorial Library.
And here is a library fact to ponder, if you do not read during the summer it will take you until Thanksgiving to be at the same reading level you are at now.
Have a safe and relaxing summer, live well, READ!
SCHOOL NURSE NEWS:
We have completed another school year. Looking back it seems to have gone by quickly.
Have a wonderful, enjoyable summer vacation. Remember your bike helmets and sunscreen. Be sure to drink plenty of water during those hot summer days.
Be safe and healthy and relaxed.
