Events at the Hawlemont Library
January
January is Chris Van Allsburg month in the library. Chris is a Caldecott medal-winning author. Three of his books have been made into films, Zathura, Polar Express, and Jumanji. Chris Van Allsburg has also won many awards for his illustrations, including the New York Times and Parents Choice Awards for Illustration and the International Board of Books Citation for illustration. Stop by your library and check out one of his books, see for yourself why this author is so popular!
February
uring the month of February the Hawlemont library celebrates African American Authors who have received the Coretta Scott King Book and Illustrator Awards. These awards honor African American Authors and Illustrators for outstanding contributions to children's and young adult literature promoting the understanding and appreciation of all people. Some of the recipients that the library will showcase are Jacqueline Woodson, Mildred D. Taylor, Virginia Hamilton and Patricia McKissack. There will also be Historical Re-enactors form the 1800's visiting library classes and discussing Charlemont's past, the Underground Railroad and the Abolitionist Movement through out Charlemont. When visiting your library be sure to check out a book by one of the many talented African American Authors.
March
March is Dr. Seuss Month in the Hawlemont library! Classes hear books read-a-loud, create illustrations and poetry/rhyme in the style of Dr. Seuss. The library also celebrates READ ACROSS AMERICA with an all school read. The entire school stops and reads at the same time for 20 minutes, including the cafeteria, custodian, office staff, teachers and students! We also have performers from Mohawk's Honor Society visit read and act out some of our favorite Dr. Seuss stories. Make an effort to stop by your library and take part in READ ACROSS AMERICA, check out a great book by Dr. Seuss!
